    1.) natural resourcesany of the useful minerals and other materials that people take from the Earth to use

    2.) renewable resources – resources that are replaced as they are used and will be used again in a short time  (ex: trees)

    3.) NON-renewable resources – resources that when they are used up, will take a long time to be made new again  (ex: fossil fuels)

    4.fossil fuels - a natural fuel, formed in Earth’s past from the dead remains of living organisms

    5.coal - a black rock mineral that can be taken from the earth and burned for fuel

    6.) oil - a slippery liquid that comes from minerals as well as animal and vegetable fat; an example of oil is petroleum from beneath the earth

    7.natural gas - gas from the earth's crust through natural openings; mainly used as fuel for generating electricity and heat

    8.fossil - the shape of a bone, shell, plant or animal that has been pressed and preserved in rock for a long period of time

    Lesson 17 Vocabulary

    1. water cycle-  the movement of water through Earth’s environment
    2. precipitation – any form of water falling from the clouds to Earth
    3. transpiration – the release of water vapors by plants
    4. runoff – water from rain or melted snow that flows along Earth’s surface into bodies of water
    5. atmosphere – the layer of the air that surrounds Earth
    6. weather – the condition of the atmosphere at a certain time and place
    7. climate – the average of all weather conditions in an area through all seasons over a certain period of time
    8. clouds – a group of water droplets or ice crystals floating in the air
